MUSIC

THEY MIGHT BE GIANTS (Cd to learn science in a fun musical way)

sc ima Have you ever dreamt as a child to learn while listening to cool music? Well, i did and i wish I had this CD when i was young. The new family-oriented album conquers the world of science ("Meet The Elements," "Photosynthesis," "My Brother The Ape," "Computer-Assisted Design") aimed at 3-6 yrs old delivers the trademark melodies and wit that have made TMBG a household name for more than 25 years. LULLABY performed by Sophie Barker

lul imaLullaby CD A captivating collection of bedtime songs for little ones (& grown ups!) Performed by Sophie Barker, the voice of Zero 7. In our current culture of mobile phones, televisions, iPods, digital radios - constant active and passive distraction - the tradition of singing lullabies to our young ones is being lost. A recent survey by Toluna consumer group showed that an increasing number of parents are more likely to sing pop songs or TV theme tunes to their children at bedtime, and that only 12% of parents know the words to traditional lullabies. Time-honoured traditional lullabies no longer seem to be passed down from generation to generation. So, is the beloved lullaby really in danger of being 'rocked out of the nursery' by Lady Gaga? Not if 'Lullaby' - a captivating collection of bedtime songs for little ones, has anything to say about it. Performed by Sophie Barker from Zero 7, 'Lullaby' is making a stand for our forgotten bedtime melodies, and will remind parents of the magic of our traditional lullabies. sb imaThere are a lot of CDs out there on this genre but the uniqueness of this CD is Sophie's lovely melodic vocals with ethereal musical arrangements. Truly amazing music - not just for kids. It seems it was created with the mums in mind as it is everything but boring and you will want to listen to it over and over again. There is also a unique version of Somewhere Over The Rainbow and the most sung classics like Twinkle Twinkle Little Star and Baa Baa Black Sheep. Highly recommended by London Mums. www.sophiebarker.com/lullaby.php

BABYBOOMBOOM: LEARN FOREIGN LANGUAGES WITH THE NURSERY RHYMES

If you want your toddler to start learning foreign languages early on I recommend the CD babyboomboom, a multi-lingual musical CD of well-known and traditional nursery rhymes sung in English and a second language, currently Italian, German, Spanish and French. The CDs play well-known and traditional nursery rhymes and songs in English, with each verse repeated in a second language. These CDs are great for us to practice languages (not only for kids) with well-known songs. You can buy the babyboomboom CDs by emailing monica@londonmums.org.uk for 9.99 pounds each or directly from www.babyboomboom.com - for free delivery charges mention London Mums. Interesting enough the CDs have been developed by mumpreneurs for children aged 0-5 years of age. (Posted in March 2009).

Putumayo Kids' Brazilian Playground

A MUST HAVE CD every family should have. Brazilian Playground features samba, bossa nova and forro' rhythms that reflect Brazil's diverse culture and easy-going way of life. In celebration of the exuberant sounds of this fascinating country, Putumayo Kids has collected 13 child-friendly songs from many of Brazil's most talented musicians including Teresa Cristina, a leading samba singer, and Gilberto Gil. Along with this release, the Putumayo Kids website offers FREE learning guides for parents to use in conjunction with the CD. We absolutely love it. A portion of Putumayo's proceeds from the sale of this CD will be donated to the AxE' Project in support of its efforts to educate and defend the rights of disadvantaged Brazilian children. BINGO: Brazilian and Caribbean Rhythms for the family

Another great compilation of songs for children in English with Brazilian and Caribbean Rhythms. This is a very entertaining CD for both parents and kids (of all ages).. and nannies too! Beautifully performed by jazz singer Christy Baron and Roger Davidson's six-piece Latin combo. (Posted in May 2008) www.babymusic.com

BABY MUSIC: The Baby Sense Womb to World CD and the Lala compilation

The Baby Sense Womb to World CD was conceived by Megan Faure, co-author of Baby Sense, and birthed by William Gets, musician and father with a passion for sensory nurturing of babies. It encompasses sounds combined to promote sleep and calm a newborn. Blended white noise, in combination with womb sounds transport baby back to the last comforting days in the womb. The Baby Sense Lala CD includes instrumental lullabies which help to soothe and settle the baby at sleeptime. This is a great investment for all sleep deprived mums and dads.As suggested by our expert in April's article, it is recommended to spend some time lulling a baby or toddler before sleep time. This precious time helps both mummy and baby connect and goes a long way to promote bonding.(Posted in May 2008) www.mybabysense.co.uk

CLASSICAL MUSIC FOR BABIES: Baby Cello and Baby Symphony CDs

Baby Cello is a 75-minute CD of calming music for baby and parent. This music really helps babies to sleep... Also good soundtrack whilst driving with fractious toddlers. Imagine an orchestra of cellos playing in harmony, performing beloved, tranquil melodies such as Ave Maria, Greensleeves and The Girl from Ipanema. The effect is magical. The same publisher has also released a Baby Symphony CD which is great to start introduce children to classical music from an early age. That includes music by 12 great composers, spanning 300 years and performed by the major London orchestras. The music has been chosen to engage baby's interest by encouraging play while prompting a sense of wonder. It is flowing, graceful and uplifting. www.babymusic.com. (Posted on 11 March 2008).

CD BIG SONGS FOR LITTLE ONES

'How many times have you heard the same nursery rhymes in a day? 20, 30, 40? Well, as nice as they are, it can get quite boring after a while. I have found a great CD that is actually great for parents as much as for children. It has been released by Amandas Action Kids - the entertainment we had at our party and it's fantastic!!! The CD BIG SONGS FOR LITTLE ONES includes such a funky re-arrangement of the nursery rhymes that you would barely recognise them .... Diego and I spend hours dancing to the funky tunes. I must say that the more we listen to it the more we like it. It costs only 9.99 pounds and I think it would make a great Xmas present. Check it out before buying it on www.myspace.com. You can buy it through Amazon.com or even better (and cheaper) directly from Amanda's website'. From Monica & toddler Diego (October 2007).

BOOKS

THE AMAZING ABC ADVENTURE by Lorna Maxwellabc ima A MUST-HAVE Book for every pre-schooler and for school kids, 'The Amazing ABC Adventure' is a wonderfully original and unique alphabet book which appeals to children and adults alike! Each letter has an illustrated page in which there are many many objects and animals to find as well as a wiggly worm looking for love! The younger children can seek and find with an adult and the older ones can broaden their vocabulary independently. It's educational and entertaining and can be returned to time and time again. Another of its advantages is you can do as little or as much as you have time for - a big bonus in this busy world today. It is a timeless piece which makes learning fun. London Mums absolutely LOVE this book! www.lornamaxwell.com

'HOLD ON TIGHT' BY CLAIRE CARPENTER (ILLUSTRATED BY PETE DUFFIELD) - VOTED BOOK OF THE MONTH IN MARCH 2010 BY LONDON MUMS hold ima 'Hold on tight', voted by London Mums book of the month in March 2010, is a fantastic new book by mumpreneur and author Claire Carpenter whose story inspires children to believe in themselves and to follow their dreams, come what may. This book will help to nurture in your child a powerful mindset that will give them the ability to: Follow their dreams, believe in themselves, develop high self-esteem, live a rich and fulfilling life. The story is absolutely good fun for the kids as well as educational and the illustrations very big and perfectly drawn by the magic pen of Pete Duffield. It is a must have book for all kids and should be translated into all languages because of its universal value. 'Hold on tight' is the sort of book you want to read again and again (not just the kids...., mums too). In Claire's own words: "The lesson of my first book is 'Hold on Tight' to your dreams. Most children's heads are full of dreams and ideas of what they'd like to do when they grow up. Yet how many adults have discarded their childhood dreams for a life of conformity and mediocrity? Whenever we have a dream, we will always meet people who tell us to forget it, that our dream is foolish and can never come true. This book teaches children that they must hold onto their dreams regardless." Parents can learn a great lesson in this book, too. Buy the book online http://www.yesyoucanbooks.com

cones picTHE CONES - THE BEGINNING: London Mums book of the month for February 2010. A storybook for children about the very first time road Cones come to life. They have faces and have names. We like this book because it is original and brings to life road cones and teaches road safety in a fun and unusual way. The first in a number of books which will create The Cones series. www.colourheroes.com

COLIN THE COASTGUARD:colin picOur book of the month for November 2009 has been voted 'COLIN THE COASTGUARD - Frisky falls overboard', the second book in the series for children. Our book club absolutely adores this character. We hope the Cbeebies will produce it as a TV programme one day. The first two books in the series have very colourful central characters and action packed stories: real life heroes and heroines combining to create worlds of adventure and challenges overcome. Colin and his friends deliver that rare mix of enchantment, adventure and a positive 'can-do' attitude to life but it is all imbued with a caring, sharing attitude and the exercise of responsible behaviour. http://www.colinthecoastguard.com

GEORGIA FOSTER'S RELEASING THE WRITER'S BLOCK E-BOOK AND SEMINAR: In September and October 2009 we tested leading Clinical Hypnotherapist and serial author Georgia Foster's new Releasing Writer's Block e-programme plus her fabolous one Day Workshop including hypnosis. gf picEvery London Mum we meet seems to have a book idea whose production is constantly postponed. Georgia's new concept has been developed to help aspiring and existing writers 'unlock the writer within' and achieve their true writing potential. Georgia developed the idea for her new E-programme when she discovered that many of her clients voiced dreams of writing a book, poetry, TV drama or comedy, but were not realising their writing desire and potential - for reasons that were all in the mind. Releasing Writer's Block, e-book and MP3 hypno download, will help you to break the thought patterns that trigger self-doubt about your ability to write. It offers new ways of responding to the writer within, helping you learn new writing strategies and to get out of the writer's block rut. It all makes sense once you chat with Georgia. She is an amazing lady and professional and we believe that you would need to meet her to fully gain from the programme. But attending the workshop actually worked for me making my daily writing easy and rewarding experience rather than a dreaded one. You will tell me if you have enjoyed my messages and blogs in future. I would have to thank Georgia for helping me release my potential. Although we recommend attending the seminar, if you can't the ebook (with MP3 hypno download) is also very useful - Get it from www.georgiafoster.com

sg picTHE SPOILT GENERATION by Dr. Aric Sigman (Non-Fiction) £12.99 - voted book of the month in October 2009 by London Mums: This book makes a very good read for parents, quite illuminating on how our generation has developed. In the space of a few decades the way we parent has changed dramatically. Something we once did intuitively has become the subject of political fashion, guided by experts. The result? Our children - right across society - are now spoilt in ways that go far beyond materialism. They have been given so much in terms of legislation, rights and experience, yet they are suffering unimaginably, with rates of child depression, underage pregnancy, obesity and pre-teen alcoholism the highest since records began. By removing boundaries and retreating from authority, we adults have, it seems, failed our children, robbing them of their basic supporting structures. In this book, Dr Aric Sigman - himself a hands-on father of four - takes issues by the scruff of the neck, among them children's sense of entitlement, the effects of television and computers, single-parent homes and 'blended' families, parental guilt and the compensation culture. Tackling each one in a refreshingly honest and direct way, he offers a clear and practical message to us all - parents, grandparents, teachers and policy-makers alike - as to how we can redress the status quo, redefine our roles and, together, create a more joined-up approach. In so doing, we will cultivate better-behaved and happier children, who in turn, will cast of their reputation as the spoilt generation. Published from October by www.littlebrown.co.uk and www.aricsigman.com

IT'S NOT FAIR! by Gill Hines & Alison Baverstock Non-Fiction £12.99 (Parenting): A new book from the authors of the best-selling title: Whatever! A down to earth guide to parenting teenagers. It is a great book to help you with bright and challenging children, those who take 'no' for an answer - there are a lot of them these days. Given free rein they can be entertaining - but the risk is that they grow into out-of-control and dangerously self-centred and attention-seeking young adults. This easy-to-read and sensible book is packed with wisdom and tips for parenting children, to help them become well-rounded and independent young people. It includes help on teaching your child values, dealing with behaviour, supporting them as they mature around sensitive issues such as sex and drug education and how to weather the occasional storm. Published from September 09 by http://www.littlebrown.co.uk (September 2009)

BABYMOON by Melanie La'Brooy £6.99 (Fiction / Lifestyle) Babymoon is a hilarious and honest account of what it's like to be pregnant. It's for any woman going through the turbulent nine months of pregnancy themselves OR for any woman with friends or family going through it OR for any woman who just wants a funny read! Published from September 09 by http://www.littlebrown.co.uk (September 2009)

Book of the month (September 2009): 'THE ANATOMY OF PILATES' is a great manual for those who love Pilates. It is available from £14.99 by Lotus Publishing at http://www.lotuspublishing.co.uk, http://www.amazon.co.uk and Waterstones. This book is so accurate and detailed that you can make your own gym class and save yourself hundreds of pounds while you shape up. Gym memberships can be expensive and tend to de-motivate rather than motivate you when it comes to fitness. Pilates is a great exercise that gently stretches and strengthens your body to be in the best condition. So don't pay for your exercise classes, create your own. Just choose the place, gather your friends and have fun with the positions illustrated in Paul Massey's book. (September 2009)

New Book Release: 'The Viva Mayr Diet in 14 days': viva ima diet books are usually dreadful. Diets are no fun, but if you make positive changes in your lifestyle and as a result you also loose weight that's great. London Mums loved reading Dr Harald Stossier's inspiring new book 'The Viva Mayr Diet'. It's about detoxification as the core element of any treatment program at the Viva Mayr clinic with emphasis on rest, strict cleansing of the digestive system and reform of eating habits (for example learning to slow down and chew food properly to encourage proper digestion and optimal nutrition). In this book Dr Harald Stossier and journalist Helena Frith Powell reveal the simple principles of a new approach to eating and 14 day start-up plan that will give you a flatter stomach and glowing skin in two weeks and will have you feeling so good that you will want to make it a way of life. There are also great and easy recipes (dishes cooked with no fat which taste even better than those cooked with fat) that are suitable for the whole family. www.viva-mayr.com

Sophie Dahl's sumptuous treats: Sophie Dahl's 'Voluptuous Delights' new cookbook is a real treat. dahl ima The granddaughter of children's author Roald Dahl has written her very own recipe book. Sophie's cookbook reflects a positive relationship with food. The 31-year-old food lover tells about she started her particular career as a voluptuous model thanks to Vogue's contributing editor, Isabella Blow. Sophie admits that she was actually never told to lose weight which is quite unusual for the modelling world. Having grown up in a family that liked to cook, she is still attached to old favourite recipes such as nursery food, like a fish pie, rice puddings. What's entertaining about this book is the personal stories explained with every recipe. Miss Dahl's Voluptuous Delights, by Sophie Dahl, is available from Amazon www.amazon.co.uk.

dg ima BOOK OF THE MONTH in April 2009 is 'How to be a Domestic Goddess' (not the Nigella's book but the one sold at Past Times) - Drawing on the wisdom of our mothers and grandmothers this invaluable handbook will teach you (and sometimes also make you laugh) how to deal with every possible domestic situation, from training your husband to ironing and mending and being the perfect hostess. I loved this book. It is like a 'Desperate Housewife' manual!!! It's now on top of my kitchen table always handy. It also has lovely nostalgic colour illustrations. You can get this book discounted online at http://www.pasttimes.com

211 ima'211 Things A Bright Girl Can Do' - The totally wicked guide to all those essential lifeskills girls never get taught at school. Good as a Xmas or Birthday day gift to a girlfriend. http://www.pasttimes.com

Book of the month (March 2009): ELIZABETH PANTLEY'S 'THE NO-CRY DISCIPLINE SOLUTION': ep ima This is really a great manual full of tips on how to get your toddlers to be obedient and behave nicely with no tears. As always with Pantley's books, her writing style is really easy to read and is also fun so you will get through it very quickly and will feel satisfied for having a lot of practical tips on how to smile more with your kids rather than feeling frustrated and exhausted. One of the best parenting books i have ever read. Forget most books on the market. This is really the one you need.

I have read most of Pantley's books by now and I am a huge fan of her no-cry solutions for every child-related problem/issue (from sleep, nap, potty training). These days there is far too much pressure on parents to be perfect and to achieve children's milestones quickly at the price of adopting crying out methods or similar. Well, if you think differently don't worry, because there are millions of women out there who think the same. Pantley is one of them and has developed alternative techniques to the crying-out ones. And the fact is that they work as well without shedding tears...

Also highly recommended is Pantley's latest book 'THE NO-CRY NAP SOLUTION': in this valuable manual Elizabeth explains to parents the utter importance of quality napping to day and nightime behaviour, and shares with readers her gentle napping techniques, tried and tested with over 200 families of all sizes and circumstances around the world. Elizabeth addresses issues such as children who resist naps, dealing with schedule changes, turning short naps into longer ones, and explores how napping benefits children indepth. http://www.pantley.com/elizabeth

Book of the month for February 2009 is COLIN THE COASTGUARD, co the first book in a series designed for youngsters pre-school and in their early school years. Either with parental reading, guidance or help, early readers can enjoy its inherent goodness. For those parents looking for illustrations which would enrich a bedtime narrative, Colin provides an involving pictorial experience ending with a deliberately selected scene of twilight peace and calm, as the last colour spread is turned. The series is supported by a fantastic website with lots of activities for toddlers as well. Highly recommended. http://www.colinthecoastguard.com.

BABY SENSE BOOK SERIES (posted August 2008)

megan logo

'BABY SENSE'- Babies don't come with a manual... This is an old saying. Now they do come with a manual and this is 'Baby Sense' by Megan Faure & Ann Richardson. I have read all sorts of books before and during my baby's first months and I was very confused on what to follow .... These two books are very easy to read A to Z manuals that contain everything parents need to know, especially practical tips anybody can follow, as and when to solve all problems babies have. Baby Sense include very sensible tips to deal with breastfeeding (or bottlefeeding if this is the preferred choice), crying, weaning. It has very useful boxes highlighting the tips making it very easy even for busy mums to find the right information at first sight. If I had known this book before I would have never wasted my time with books by Gina Ford ... The authors give very good insights into what it feels like to a baby when they are first met by the world, how to interact with them calmly, how to make them comfortable and calm. How to help them into a flexible routine that works for you and them. All parents should have a copy of this book.

'SLEEP SENSE': By the same authors of Baby Sense. If you have ever experienced sleep deprivation caused by unsettled babies and toddlers, you'll find excellent straight forward practical advice to deal with helping your child to learn how to sleep independently. The good thing about this book on sleep is that it follows the various steps into children's sleep routine. Most books take for granted that babies will sleep by the 6th month of age but if they don't you are stuck with no advice. This sleep manual addresses the sleep issues babies as well as toddlers have, which are obviously very different, and it gets to the root of the problems.

Our book of the month is "TODDLER SENSE" by Ann Richardson: Imagine that your child is faced with a huge, empty canvas. As he grows and develops from a one year old tottering around on chubby legs, to a round toddler with a big head, to the more athletic build of the pre-schooler, he will 'paint' his way through these exciting and wondrous years, taking you with him on this precious journey... These toddler years are the transition between the baby he has outgrown and the child he is becoming. Ann Richardson, best selling South African author and parenting expert, has written an easy to read book Toddler Sense, to help you monitor all aspects of your child's development. Ann has a "no mess, no fuss" approach to solving some of the common problems in this age group, such as poor eating habits and sleep disorders. This knowledge will help you to understand your child better so that he can benefit best from his world.
